Alvar Aalto was a Finnish architect and designer whose career grew alongside Finland’s industrialisation and economic growth during the first half of the twentieth century. Aalto’s furniture design is considered to be Scandinavian Modern despite his architecture varying throughout his career.
Alvar and his wife Aino established the firm Artek in 1935 to sell Aalto’s designs, although the production was outsourced. After Artek was established, the majority of furniture produced by other manufacturers was stamped "Aalto Design Made in Finland". Furniture made before Artek was established weren't stamped at all, neither were designs made post 1950s and also some designs that were manufactured in Sweden.
