About this piece
A Gilded Iron & Bead-Mounted Mirror
Continental, 1930 - 1940
The outline of this beautifully made mirror owes its pattern to the 'Marginal' or 'Cushion' mirrors of late Seventeenth century Northern Europe. However, the frivolity of the decoration is far closer to that seen in the workshops of Venice - a fineness of line, colour & an understanding of refracting light. There are few comparable pieces that have appeared on the market and not other mirrors of this type but the designer and workshop were clearly working at the very top of their field.
Undoubtedly from the same workshop, was a table offered by Jeremy Ltd. - the highly respected London dealers - in 2008 (pic 1 & 2). Their table was described as being "made from thousands of rectangular chandelier pendants, drops, and glass beads. The use of ruby and pale amber cut glass being most interesting." The whereabouts of this table is unknown.
There are a few other similarly decorated pieces of furniture that bear the same decorative hand but with no known maker / designer attached. The Palais Sursock in Beirut has a lantern (pic 3) hanging in its spectacular stairwell; Rose Uniacke sold a pair of the same design in 2008. Dorotheum auction house also sold a monumental pair of similarly beaded electrified vases in the past ten years.
The only design firm to whom one could attribute such designs, is Maison Bagues. Founded in Auvergne by Noel Bagues in 1840 as bronze founders, the company grew to be the most dynamic and influential lighting manufacturer of the early Twentieth century. Working with important decorators and designers from Jansen to Armand Albert Rateau their designs, their output can be found throughout Europe and the World.
