About this piece
With a double bullnose moulding to the outer rim, dropping into a deep curve at the waist over a lower bowl carved with large acanthus leaves. The finial carved as a fruiting bud. At the four compass points is a gilt-bronze boss from which the large chains run up to a circular ceiling rose

This large-scale example of Alabaster turning and carving from Volterra, in the region of Pisa, is a tour-de-force. It marks the start of the region's revival of fortune as their skills and products began to be exported throughout Europe. The lack of additional ormolu ornament suggests a piece made for export to the United Kingdom
