About this piece

12th or 13th Century

The globe shape with a flattened base and hollowed out interior, carved in Istrian stone with a repeated motif of scrolling vines, bunches of grapes and stylised birds. Various old bronze repairs and lead plugs.

The font was discovered in the garden of a cottage close to Battle Abbey in East Sussex. Whilst it may be English carving, it has close similarities to Continental examples.
