Milan, Italy, circa 1900
Veneered in ebony with bone inlay, the trefoil backs each with a cartouche of duxieme partie etched bone and ebony marquetry in the manner of Serlio surmounted by a painted figure; the narrow backs each flanked by salamonic columns leading to the inlaid seats supported by arched trestle legs.
Ferdinando Pogliani (1832 - 1899) was a leading cabinet-maker in Milan, active from 1854; his skill in producing elegant ebony and ivory inlaid furniture met with widespread acclaim
