About this piece
Rectangular glass top with brass and wrapped leather frame
France, circa 1958
Towards the end of the 1950's Mategot almost completely abandoned his 'signature' perforated sheet metal and began to give both glass and leather more importance. This was a nod towards a more luxurious feel that fell in line with the recovering prosperity of the 1960s and a softer, more gentle middle class taste. He presented this shift as his 'elegant material' period and the stitched and wrapped leather leather legs on this table are a direct acknowledgement of the chic decorative technique used by his contemporary jacques Adnet.
The second image shows an apartment in Neuilly-sur-Seine, 1962, with a similar glass and brass coffee table with the leather-sheathed legs
