The inlaid walnut and maple quatrefoil is a signature of Bevan's work, appearing throughout his furniture designs. He was heavily associated both with the Aesthetic Movement and the Gothic Revival. As such, the chair represents this cross-over of styles, the japanned black finish decorated with Gothic elements
