Holland Park Apartment

Rose Uniacke is an internationally renowned designer, known for her mastery of light and space, and her pursuit of purity and refinement. Detailed yet apparently simple,  Rose’s work draws upon historical influences, combining restrained richness of character with warmth, serenity and a timeless elegance.

“I like strength and beauty in furniture - there needs to be a function or a point to the detail. Sometimes I look for refinement and sometimes playfulness but to me there is an innate luxury in simplicity, in uncluttered edited space where every addition makes a considered  contribution”  - Rose Uniacke

The vision for Holland Park Villas is one of understated luxury and refinement. Using natural materials and organic textures Rose links the interior spaces to their dramatic exterior context. Soft drapes frame verdant park views through the full-height windows, blurring the boundaries between inside and out.

Impeccable workmanship and superlative organic materials unify the scheme of stone, marble, leather, velvet and cashmere, linen and hard-woods. Every modern convenience is seamlessly integrated including under-floor heating, comfort cooling, Lutron lighting, Dornbracht and Duravit bathroom fittings and an AMX Home Automation system.

Light filled and serene, every detail is thoughtfully considered and diligently perfected with antique furniture presented alongside contemporary pieces, many designed by Rose and bespoke for this apartment. To complete the scheme, the walls throughout have been softened with a specialist paint finish and hung with an expertly curated collection of significant artworks and photography including pieces by Michael Landy, Anish Kapoor, Ibrahim El-Salahi and Victor Passmore.

This juxtaposition of old with the new is characteristic of the effortless blending of antique and modern elements that has formed the cornerstone of Rose’s international reputation.

In the dramatic entrance hallway an early 1900’s Secessionist Pendant Light hangs above a Black Kilkenny Centre Table in solid marble by Rose Uniacke. To the right of the study door, a bespoke Rose Uniacke Bench In Pippy Oak sits beneath “Girl On A Swing” by the celebrated photographer Johnnie Shand Kydd.

The first passageway is hung with “The Group” - 12 signed etchings by Ibrahim El-Salahi. The cool Elegance of a Swedish hall sofa is offset by a rustic vine-wood side table.

In the Kitchen 3 Hand Blown Murano Glass Lanterns are hung over a sleek island unit.

Dining is defined by an oak Drapers Table, and eight Oak Theatre Chairs by Rose Uniacke beneath two copper 'Tallerkenlampan' pendant lights by Poul Henningsen for Louis Poulsen and a striking pair of etchings by Anish Kapoor.

In the Reception Room, a bespoke Rose Uniacke generously proportioned Drawing Room Sofa, two Large Rosewater Armchairs and a pair of Frits Schlegel Beech and Sea Grass Armchairs are grouped around an overscaled custom coffee table of rough-hewn oak. Aesthetic period and Arts and Crafts side tables display a collection of sensuous ceramics complimented by botanical Etchings by Michael Landy  from his ‘Nourishment’ serie.

The fabric choices include soft natural linens, luxurious cashmeres, rust coloured and bottle green velvets and cushions in vintage Fortuny silk.

The Master Bedroom is a masterclass in serenity and monastic calm. Bespoke Carrara Cone Lamps by Rose Uniacke flank the canopied bed, swathed with tonal layers of white on white cotton and soft linens. Book-matched Library Chairs and a Rose Uniacke Hoof Occasional Table are placed beneath a pair of abstract etchings by Victor Passmore. A Limited Edition Writing Table by Rose Uniacke in veneered Amboyna Wood and a caned Stitched Armchair, wrapped with soft cream leather, stand before the full-height windows, the light diffused through billowing layers of cotton voile.

In each of the subsequent Bedrooms, the sense of timeless calm prevails. Employing the subtlest of palettes - blush, yellows or the lightest of bluey greens, Rose has furnished each with its own distinctive character and charm. Pieces here include Floating Side Cabinets by Rose Uniacke, veneered in 1930s 'Lob Lolly' pine, and bespoke benches and cushions upholstered with vintage Fortuny fabrics.

The organic narrative is established in the masculine retreat of the study where textured linen upholstery and full soft curtains are offset by a striking Terrão Bench by the Brazilian designer Domingos Tótora. The perfect place to read, a sculptural arm chair by the Danish designer Oliver Gustav is paired with a bespoke Hoof Table by Rose Uniacke.
