About this piece
Attributed to the workshop of Heinrich Gambs
An early 19th century brass, ebony and mahogany rectangular mirror with intricately detailed pieced brass inlay
Antoine Cheneviere states in 'Russian Furniture - the Golden Age 1780 - 1840' that "the great majority - if not all - of these pieces (by Gambs) are unsigned. Passing references in archive documents to an order, delivery or payment are the only evidence on which we can base an attribution." However, it appears that each of Gambs' known designs from about 1800 onwards was emblazoned with his 'finger-print' - the repeated use of gilt-brass inlaid ebony banding in a variety of simple or more complicated geometric patterns.
